미국 북부와 캐나다에 자생하는 회색곰은 사실 불곰(Ursus arctos horribilis)의 아종이며, 혼동을 막기 위해 북아메리카 불곰이라고 부르기도 합니다. 회색곰은 두꺼운 갈색 모피와 큰 어깨 혹, 곧은 주둥이, 둥근 귀로 식별할 수 있습니다. 그들은 긴 발톱이 난 강한 앞다리를 지녔으며, 이 앞다리로 땅을 파고 사냥합니다. 그들은 또한 아주 크게 자랄 수 있지만, 개체에 따라 크기 차이가 많이 나곤 합니다. 수컷의 몸무게는 평균 약 240kg이고, 몸길이는 2.2m입니다. 암컷의 몸무게는 평균 160kg이고, 몸길이는 1.8m입니다.
