산호랑나비(Papilio machaon)는 온난한 지역과 삼림 지대는 물론이고 심지어 유럽, 아시아, 북아메리카의 툰드라 지역에서도 서식하는 나비입니다. 산호랑나비의 연노란색 앞날개에는 검회색의 무늬가 그려져 있으며, 뒷날개에는 검푸른색 점과 붉은색 눈꼴 무늬가 있습니다. 또한 날개에는 호랑이와도 비슷한 무늬가 있기 때문에 '산호랑나비'라는 이름이 지어졌습니다. 산호랑나비의 암수는 크기와 외형 면에서 차이가 없으며, 평균 날개 폭은 6.5~8.6cm입니다. 애벌레의 몸은 통통하고 연초록색을 띠며, 마디마다 검은색과 주황색의 무늬가 있습니다.
