제왕나비(Danaus plexippus)는 세계적으로 널리 서식하는 나비이지만, 주로 북아메리카와 남아메리카에서 가장 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 제왕나비의 날개 폭은 8.9~10.2cm이고 몸무게는 약 0.5g입니다. 주황색과 빨간색이 어우러진 날개에는 뚜렷이 보이는 검은 날개맥이 있으며, 검은색의 두꺼운 테두리와 흰색 반점이 줄지어 있습니다. 제왕나비의 다리와 더듬이는 검은색이며, 몸통 역시 검은색이지만 흰색 반점이 그려져 있습니다. 제왕나비 애벌레의 몸은 통통하며 노란색과 검은색, 그리고 흰색 줄무늬로 덮여 있습니다.
