공작나비(Aglais io)는 유럽과 아시아의 온난한 초원과 삼림 지대에 서식하는 나비의 일종으로, 갈색의 가장자리와 독특한 눈꼴 무늬가 특징인 네 개의 붉은 날개가 있습니다. 이 눈꼴 무늬는 노란색, 파란색, 빨간색 혹은 보라색 비늘로 이루어져 있으며 검은색 테두리에 감싸여 있습니다. 날개의 밑은 갈색과 검은색입니다. 수컷과 암컷은 비슷하게 생겼지만, 암컷이 수컷보다 최대 10% 정도 큰 경우가 있습니다. 공작나비의 날개 폭은 5~6.4cm입니다. 애벌레는 검고 털이 많으며, 번데기는 초록색이고 등에 뾰족하게 솟은 돌기가 있습니다.
