잡식성 포식자이자 동물의 시체를 먹는 줄무늬하이에나(Hyaena hyaena)는 북아프리카와 중동, 서아시아에 서식하며 사바나 평원, 초원, 삼림 지대부터 건조한 산악 지대까지 다양한 환경에서 살아갑니다. 줄무늬하이에나는 강한 앞다리와 근육질의 목, 짧은 뒷다리 때문에 굽은 체형을 가지게 되었으며, 넓적한 머리와 코, 미간이 넓은 눈, 그리고 크고 뾰족한 귀가 특징입니다. 줄무늬하이에나의 몸과 다리에는 황갈색 털이 자라며, 세로로 된 검은색 줄무늬가 있습니다. 또한 척추를 타고 자라는 기다란 갈기는 두껍고 덥수룩한 꼬리와 연결됩니다. 암수의 외형은 비슷하지만, 수컷이 암컷보다 덩치가 조금 더 크고 무겁습니다. 수컷 줄무늬하이에나의 어깨 높이는 65~80cm이며, 길이는 85~130cm, 꼬리 길이는 25~40cm, 몸무게는 26~41kg입니다. 반면, 암컷은 어깨 높이가 60~75cm고, 길이는 85~105cm, 꼬리 길이는 25~40cm, 몸무게는 26~34kg입니다.
