아홉띠아르마딜로(Dasypus novemcinctus)는 등껍질을 가진 포유류로, 북아메리카와 중앙아메리카, 남아메리카의 초원, 열대 우림, 건조한 관목 지대에서 서식합니다. 아홉띠아르마딜로는 외형적으로 다양한 차이를 보이는 9가지의 아종이 있는데, 일반적인 개체는 어깨부터 엉덩이까지 커다란 판으로 이루어진 얼룩덜룩한 분홍색 빛의 회색 껍질에 감싸여 있습니다. 상체를 뒤덮고 있는 이 판은 9개의 띠로 뚜렷하게 나뉘며, 마찬가지로 껍질에 둘러싸여 있는 기다란 꼬리와 이어집니다. 아홉띠아르마딜로는 짧은 다리와 커다란 발이 특징이며, 앞발에 4개, 뒷발에는 5개의 강력한 발톱을 갖추고 있습니다. 또한 가느다란 얼굴에는 뾰족한 주둥이와 커다란 귀가 있습니다. 아홉띠아르마딜로의 머리부터 몸통까지의 길이는 38~58cm며, 꼬리는 26~53cm, 키는 등껍질의 제일 높은 부분을 기준으로 15~25cm입니다. 수컷의 몸무게는 5.5~7.7kg이고 암컷의 몸무게는 3.6~6kg로, 수컷이 암컷보다 무거울 수 있으나 암수의 외형은 동일합니다.
