갈기늑대(Chrysocyon brachyurus)는 아르헨티나, 브라질, 파라과이, 우루과이의 삼림 지대와 초원, 관목 지대에서 발견되는 갯과 동물로, 목 중앙부터 어깨뼈까지 이어지는 검고 굵은 갈기를 따서 이름이 지어졌습니다. 갈기늑대는 팔다리가 길고 가늘며 전체적으로 깡마른 듯한 모습이 특징입니다. 몸은 붉고 덥수룩한 털로 덮여 있고, 다리에는 짧고 검은 털이 자랍니다. 어깨 높이는 73~95cm, 몸길이는 95~115cm, 꼬리는 30~40cm, 몸무게는 20~29kg로, 암수의 크기와 외형은 비슷합니다.
