갈라파고스코끼리거북(Chelonoidis nigra)은 갈라파고스 제도에서 자생하는 파충류이며, 그곳 외에는 지구상 어디에도 자생하지 않습니다. 갈라파고스코끼리거북은 안장 모양 등딱지를 가진 것과 돔 모양 등딱지를 가진 유형이 있으며, 두 유형 모두 어두운 회색 빛이 나는 갈색 등딱지와 회색 피부를 지녔습니다. 안장 등딱지 거북은 목이 길고 마른 저지대에 서식하며, 돔 등딱지 거북은 목이 짧고 습한 고원에 서식합니다. 둘 다 아주 큰 크기로 자랄 수 있으며, 수컷은 몸무게가 평균 272~317kg 나가고, 암컷은 몸무게가 평균 136~181kg 나갑니다.
