흔한 타조(Struthio camelus)는 세계에서 가장 큰 알려진 조류입니다. 수컷은 몸에는 검은색 깃털이, 날개 끝과 꼬리에는 흰색 깃털이 나 있고, 암컷은 몸에 회색 빛 도는 갈색 깃털이 나 있습니다. 암수 모두 머리, 목, 다리는 분홍색과 흰색 사이의 색깔을 띠며, 아프리카의 어느 지역에서 유래되었는지에 따라 생김새에 약간의 차이가 있습니다. 수컷은 평균 키가 2.1~2.8m인데 비해 암컷은 1.7~2.0m 사이로 작습니다.
