검은꼬리프레리도그는 미국 전역과 캐나다, 멕시코 일부 지역의 초원과 건조 지역에 서식하는 설치류과 동물입니다. 검은꼬리프레리도그는 옅은 갈색을 띠며, 배 부분은 더 연한 색을 띱니다. 검은꼬리프레리도그는 긴 발톱과 작은 귀, 검은 눈과 함께 끝부분이 검은 꼬리를 지니고 있습니다. 수컷은 암컷보다 몹집이 조금 더 크지만 그 밖에 눈에 띄는 차이는 없습니다. 검은꼬리프레리도그의 몸무게는 0.68~1.36kg이며, 머리부터 몸통까지의 길이는 36~43cm, 꼬리 길이는 7.6~10.2cm입니다.
