캘리포니아바다사자는 미국 서부와 멕시코의 해안 지역에 서식하는 강치종의 일종입니다. 캘리포니아바다사자는 보통 어두운 갈색을 띠며, 몸 옆면과 배 부분은 더 연한 색을 띠지만, 일부 암컷의 몸은 연한 갈색을 띠기도 합니다. 캘리포니아바다사자 새끼는 성체와는 달리 황갈색의 솜털이 온몸을 덮고 있으며, 생후 5~7개월이 되면, 솜털이 빠지면서 성체의 모습으로 변합니다. 수컷 캘리포니아바다사자의 길이는 2.25~2.5m이며, 몸무게는 250~350kg입니다. 암컷의 길이는 1.8~2.1m이며, 몸무게는 80~100kg으로 훨씬 작습니다.
