말레이곰은 곰 종류 중에서 덩치가 작은 축에 속하며 동남아시아 열대 우림에 서식합니다. 짙은 갈색과 검은색 털을 갖고 있는데 얼굴과 주둥이는 누르스름한 빛을 띠고 흉부에는 눈에 확 띄는 노란색 반달무늬가 있습니다. 그리고 큼지막한 머리에서는 길쭉한 주둥이, 작고 둥글둥글한 귀를 관찰할 수 있습니다. 수컷과 암컷은 외형이 비슷하지만 수컷이 암컷보다 10%에서 20% 정도 몸집이 더 큰 편입니다. 몸길이는 120~150cm로 측정되며 무게는 27~65kg 정도입니다.
