코주부원숭이는 보르네오 섬(인도네시아, 말레이시아, 브루나이)의 열대 우림, 맹그로브, 습지 삼림에 서식하는 영장류입니다. 등과 머리 위에는 짙은 주황색 털이 나 있으며 가슴, 배, 팔 위쪽에는 비교적 옅은 주황색 털이, 하반신과 다리, 아래팔에는 회색 털이 나 있습니다. 특히 수컷에게는 특이하게 생긴 길쭉한 코가 있는데 덜렁거리며 입술을 덮을 정도입니다. 암컷은 수컷만큼 눈에 띄는 특징은 아니지만 영장류치고는 꽤 큰 코를 갖고 있습니다. 또한 코주부원숭이 암수는 덩치에서도 차이가 나는데, 수컷이 평균적으로 키 66~76cm에 몸무게 16~22.5kg가 나가는 반면 암컷은 키 53~62cm에 몸무게 7~12kg 수준이라고 합니다.
