북 술라웨시 바비루사는 인도네시아 술라웨시 섬과 연안 제도 주변의 작은 섬에서 서식하는 돼지로, 피부는 회색이고 털은 거의 없습니다. 특히 수컷에게는 머리 쪽으로 굽은 커다란 엄니가 네 개 달려 있습니다. 개체 크기는 머리부터 몸통까지의 길이가 85~110cm이며, 꼬리 길이는 29~32cm, 어깨 높이가 58~66cm입니다. 수컷의 몸무게는 70~100kg에 달하지만 암컷은 45~80kg에 불과합니다.

‘Babirusa’ means ‘pig deer’ in Malay.
Babirusas have a two chambered stomach, more like that of sheep than of other pigs.
The male babirusas tusks continue to grow throughout his life and can even grow into the skull.
Babirusas are missing a bone in the snout that other pigs have, so they do not engage in ‘rooting’ behaviour typical of pigs.
Babirusas are excellent swimmers; it is thought that they are found across various Indonesian islands because they swam to them.
