난쟁이카이만은 남아메리카 북부 삼림지대의 강가나 늪에 서식하는 소형 악어 종입니다. 카이만은 성숙할수록 겉모습이 변화하는 특징과 더불어, 돌출된 커다란 갈색(이따금 노란색도 존재) 눈을 가지고 있습니다. 난쟁이카이만 수컷의 평균적인 몸길이는 1.3~1.5m이고, 암컷은 평균 1.15m에 달합니다. 체중은 대체로 6~7kg 사이를 오갑니다.
