큰수달은 아마존강 유역과 남아메리카 판타날 습지에 서식하는 대형 반수생 포유류입니다. 흡사 벨벳을 연상시키는 두꺼운 갈색 모피를 갖고 있으며, 목덜미의 독특한 하얀색 반점이 특징입니다. 그뿐만 아니라 수영에 최적화된 큰 물갈퀴와 날개 형태의 꼬리가 발달되어 있기도 합니다. 수컷과 암컷의 체구 차이는 거의 없으며, 일반적인 몸길이는 대략 150cm에서 180cm에 이릅니다. 다만 그에 비해 체중은 들쭉날쭉한 편인데, 수컷의 경우 26kg에서 32kg에 육박하며, 암컷은 그보다 조금 가벼운 22kg에서 26kg 정도라고 합니다.
