임금 펭귄(Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus)은 남극해에 서식하는 대형 해양 조류로 포클랜드와 사우스조지아를 비롯한 남극 연안 제도에서 번식 활동을 합니다. 등과 물갈퀴에는 짙은 회색, 가슴과 배의 깃털은 하얀색을 띠고 있으며, 노란 목덜미 위로 검은색 머리가 자리 잡고 있습니다. 뺨 일부분에는 밝은 주황색이 엿보입니다. 부리를 따라 긴 주황색 줄무늬가 자리하고 있는 것 역시 임금 펭귄의 특징입니다. 임금 펭귄의 신장은 70cm에서 100cm 사이로, 체중은 평균 9kg에서 14kg 사이입니다. 또한 크기는 펭귄 종을 통틀어, 황제펭귄 다음으로 덩치가 가장 큰 종이기도 합니다.
