現在、アフリカの荒野には推定 20,000 頭のライオンが棲息しているが、アフリカライオン (Panthera leo leo) の個体数はごく少ない。大陸全体でわずか 250 しか残っておらず、世界で最も絶滅に近いライオンの亜種となっている。現在の保全状況は「絶滅寸前」に指定されている。
