アメリカ合衆国南部とメキシコの砂漠が原産の大型クモガタ種であるデザートヘアリースコーピオン (Hadrurus arizonensis) は、奇襲攻撃を専門とする捕食者である。通常は黄色、黄褐色、あるいは薄い緑色をしており、背中には色の濃い部分がある。砂の中や岩の下でじっと息をひそめ、昆虫や小型脊椎動物を毒針で襲う。すると獲物は動けなくなり、その間に顎で掴むのだ。成体になると、デザートヘアリースコーピオンは体長 10～18 cm まで成長する。刺されれば痛みはあるが、通常は人間には特に危険はない。
