一般的なカバ (Hippopotamus amphibius) は、サブサハラアフリカ以南の河川に生息する大型哺乳類である。体が大きく、水に住む動物で、長く突き出た歯、鼻の上にある鼻孔、小さな耳、厚い灰色がかった茶色の皮膚が特徴である。オスは体長 4～5 m、体重 1500～2000 kg だが、メスは 体長 3.3～4.2 m、体重 1000～1500 kg である。
