リカオン (Lycaon pictus) は、アフリカンハンティングドッグまたはペインテッドウルフとも呼ばれる。サハラ以南のアフリカ全域に生息しており、大陸内に数種類の個体群と計 5 種類の亜種がいる。他のイヌ科の動物と比べて、痩せて体高が高く、非常に大きな丸い耳と珍しい配色が特徴である。通常黄色と黒のまだらの毛皮で、脚・胸・尻尾に白い斑点がある。ただし亜種にはさまざまな配色が見られる。体の一部にブチのような模様があるものもいる。
