ヒジリタマオシコガネは、地中海周辺の海岸砂丘や湿地に生息するフンコロガシの一種で、北アフリカ、ヨーロッパ、中東に生息している。頭部には 6 つの楕円形の突起があり、前脚にはさらに 4 つの突起があるため、前頭部が光線のように弧を描いているように見える。体長 10 ~ 25 mmで、光沢のある黒い外骨格で覆われている。
