ミナミシロサイは、アフリカ南部 (南アフリカ、ナミビア、ジンバブエ、ケニア、ウガンダ、ザンビア) に生息する大型の有蹄類である。体が大きく、厚い灰色の皮膚をしている。2 本の角があり、前部の角は後部の角よりもはるかに長い。頭部はほぼ直方体で、鼻は四角である。頭のてっぺんに突起した耳があり、首の付け根には頭を支える筋肉でできたコブがある。オスは、体長 3.7 ～ 4 m、体高 170 ～ 188 cm、平均体重 2300 kgである。メスは、体長 3.4 ～ 3.65 m、体高 160 ～ 177 cm、平均体重 1700 kgである。
