フェネックは、サハラ砂漠に生息する小さなイヌ科の動物である。背中、頭、尾の毛は砂色で、足、腹、顔の毛は白い。フェネックの最大の特徴は、非常に大きな尖った耳である。フェネックは、肩までの高さが 18 ～ 22 cm、頭胴長が 34～40 cm と非常に小さい。尾の長さは最大 25 cm、耳の長さは 9 ～ 10 cmである。体重は 0.8 ～ 1.9 kg である。オスはメスよりわずかに身体が大きい。フェネックは危機種とはみなされておらず、その個体数は不明だが、多数存在すると考えられている。
