Le renne (Rangifer tarandus) est une espèce d'ongulé qui vit dans les régions arctiques et subarctiques, plus précisément au Canada, aux États-Unis (Alaska), en Russie, en Norvège, en Finlande et au Groenland. L'apparence du renne dépend de son origine et de la période de l'année, mais en général, il a un pelage brun et blanc, une tête avec un cou et un menton blancs, souvent avec un museau plus foncé. Il a aussi de grands bois, dont plusieurs extrémités sont recouvertes de velours brun. Le mâle mesure entre 1,80 et 2,10 m de long et pèse entre 159 et 182 kg. La femelle, qui mesure entre 1,60 m et 2,05 m de long, pèse entre 80 et 120 kg.

There are 12 living subspecies of reindeer and 2 extinct subspecies. Different subspecies live in different geographical areas and environments, and also look slightly different.

Reindeer are the only species of deer where both males and females grow antlers (although in some reindeer subspecies, the females have lost their antlers).
Reindeer shed their antlers every year so new ones can grow. Males shed their antlers at the end of the mating season and females shed theirs after they have given birth.
