L'escargot tigre (Achatina achatina) est un grand gastéropode qui vit dans les zones boisées d'Afrique de l'ouest, notamment en Sierra Leone, au Liberia, en Côte d'Ivoire, au Ghana et au Nigeria. Il est doté d'un corps de couleur grise et d'une coquille conique jaune, orange ou brun clair rayée de noir, de laquelle il tient son nom. Il s'agit d'une espèce hermaphrodite, qui possède un appareil reproducteur mâle et femelle. Il n'y a donc pas de « mâles » et de « femelles » différenciés. Toutefois, les petits individus « pré-adultes » dont l'appareil reproducteur ne s'est pas encore développé peuvent être considérés comme mâles.
