Le scarabée sacré est un scarabée bousier qui vit dans les dunes côtières et les marais autour de la mer Méditerranée. On le trouve dans le nord de l'Afrique, en Europe et au Moyen-Orient. Ce scarabée est doté d'une tête avec 6 dentelures, ses pattes avant en ayant aussi 4 chacune, ce qui donne l'impression qu'il arbore une couronne dentelée. Avec sa carapace noire et brillante, ce scarabée mesure entre 10 et 25 mm.
