Le manchot royal (Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus) est une grosse espèce d'oiseau marin qui vit dans l'océan Austral et se reproduit dans les îles subantarctiques, notamment les îles Malouines et la Géorgie du Sud. Le manchot royal a des plumes gris foncé sur le dos et les ailes, des plumes blanches sur le ventre et le poitrail et du jaune sur la gorge. Sa tête est noire, avec des taches auriculaires orange vif, et une marque orange sur le bec. Mesurant entre 70 et 100 cm de haut, le manchot royal pèse en moyenne entre 9 et 14 kg, ce qui en fait la deuxième plus grosse espèce de manchot après le manchot empereur.
