La tarántula gigante (Theraphosa blondi) es una especie de tarántula extremadamente grande nativa de las selvas tropicales, pantanos y ciénagas de Surinam, Guyana, Guayana Francesa, Brasil y Venezuela. Es de color marrón y está cubierta por pelos de un marrón rojizo, presenta un abdomen y un tórax redondeado grandes, patas segmentadas gruesas y unos pedipalpos alargados (patas modificadas). La hembra es más grande que el macho, y los dos cuentan con unos pronunciados apéndices en el extremo de su abdomen llamados hileras con una importante función en la fabricación de la seda. La tarántula gigante la utiliza para fabricar sacos para los huevos y la transferencia de esperma, pero no fabrica telas de araña para cazar.
