El caracol tigre gigante (Achatina achatina) es una especie de gasterópodo enorme que vive en las zonas boscosas del África Occidental, más concretamente en Sierra Leona, Liberia, Costa de Marfil, Ghana y Nigeria, entre otros países. Tienen un cuerpo grisáceo y una concha cónica amarilla, naranja o marrón con rayas negras, el peculiar patrón que ha servido de inspiración para su nombre. Es una especie hermafrodita que presenta órganos reproductores tanto masculinos como femeninos, de modo que no existe diferenciación entre machos y hembras. Sin embargo, es habitual que ciertos individuos pequeños o jóvenes no hayan desarrollado aún los órganos reproductores, y pueden ser considerados machos.
