La mariposa pavo real (Aglais io) es una especie de lepidóptero que vive en las praderas y bosques templados de Europa y Asia. Tiene cuatro alas rojas con bordes marrones y ocelos distintivos que pueden estar formados por escamas amarillas, azules, rojas o moradas y un contorno negro. La parte inferior de las alas va del marrón al negro. Aunque los machos y las hembras son muy parecidos, estas últimas pueden ser hasta un 10 % más grandes. La mariposa pavo real tiene una envergadura de 5 cm a 6,4 cm. Por su parte, las orugas son negras y peludas, y las crisálidas son verdes con rugosidades puntiagudas en la parte dorsal.
