El ajolote (Ambystoma mexicanum) es un anfibio que habita exclusivamente en lagos de agua dulce de México, aunque el único hábitat natural que le queda es el lago de Xochimilco. Su color en libertad es verde y marrón con pintas negras por todo el cuerpo; sin embargo, los ajolotes que se venden como mascotas suelen ser leucísticos (blancos) o presentan mutaciones de colores vivos. Del cuello sobresalen unas prominentes branquias externas, una característica habitual en las larvas de salamandra, pero que el ajolote conserva debido a su estilo de vida más acuático. Tiene la cara ancha con ojos pequeños y boca grande, su tamaño va de los 15 a los 45 cm de largo y pesan de media unos 300 g.
